    How to Use Breakpoints in Dev Tools- Part I The modern software development team is beginning to blur the traditional lines between developer and tester. This means that developers are starting to get more involved with writing test automation at all levels of the pyramid, and it also means that testers are starting to get more involved with the inner workings of an application. Wouldn’t it be great if you were able to find the causes of JavaScript bugs rather than just reporting on them? Using breakpoints in Chrome’s Dev Tools is a great way to do this! In this post, I’ll be leading you through a hands-on tutorial on using Chrome Dev Tools for debugging. I learned this information from this helpful Google blog post, but I’m using an example application so you can try the various breakpoint methods yourself. It’s important to note that in order to use these breakpoints, you’ll need to have your application installed locally. You can’t just go to a deployed version of your company’s application and debug it. This post shows you how to run a sample React application locally; you can work with your developers to get your team’s application running locally as well.     Most Brutally Honest  Maaike Brinkhof tweeted this last week:   Give me your most brutally honest definition of software testing.  As it happens, I have a definition of software testing that works for me, and it is (honestly) my honest answer:   Testing is the pursuit of relevant incongruity.But Maaike asked for the most brutally honest definition. How might that change what I'd say? Well, what is brutal honesty? As I interpret the term, it describes a statement of perceived truth given with no regards for the feelings of anyone who might hear it. That gives me a route in: can I find someone with a perspective that might offend us testing snowflakes, someone who is relevant to us, and someone whose view I can characterise with extreme candour?I thought about this for about, um, one second and chose THE BUSINESS.A perspective that might offend? Check. In the main, businesses run for the benefit of the business and, particularly as they get larger, can lose touch with their staff as individuals, become insensitive to employees' feelings about their work and why they do it, and blind to the craft that any given person learned and takes a pride in applying on a daily basis.Relevant to us?   • Bloggers Club: What’s the best career advice you’ve had?

    When I was in university, I signed up to a mentoring program. Back then, I actually had no interest in pursuing a career in IT, I was actually a lot more interested in a career in management consulting - so this piece of advice can apply to all disciplines, in my opinion.I spoke to the careers advisor at my university  about what I was thinking of doing in the future and she suggested a guy called Dan to be my mentor.There's one piece of advice that he gave me, that still sticks with me.What makes you so f***en special?Now, as someone who lives in Sweden - this seems to be in direct contrast to the first rule of Jantelagen (Law of Jante), "You're not to think you are anything special" so let me try to explain how I have interpreted this piece of advice.It's more a matter of forcing some self-reflection and realising what you have to offer, than it is about being special.When I was starting out my career, I was well-aware of the fact that it can be very hard to land your first role - it seemed that a lot of companies wanted someone with experience, which is hard to get if you don't have experience.But more importantly, I knew I was competing for roles where a lot of people were applying.I had to ask myself, what could I potentially offer a company, that another candidate couldn't.
