  • Exploring Github CLI 1.0

Exploring Github CLI 1.0 On one of my previous posts, Exploring Github CLI, I talked about Github CLI when it was still on beta mode and have been using its commands on my personal projects. Being able to create a repository straight from the command line or creating pull requests without switching to the Github UI was a time saver. This month, Github announced that Github CLI is officially out of beta mode and since then additional commands have been added in allowing you to run your entire Github workflow straight from your terminal. What can you do with Github CLI 1.0?With version 1.0, you can now run your entire workflow from your terminal whether it's cloning an existing repository, approving and merging a pull request, creating a new release or creating gists. Version 1.0 also allows you to make authenticated request to Github API directly and also set custom alias command for easy access. Finally, you can now also use Github CLI with Github Enterprise Server. In this post, let's explore Github CLI 1.0 further and look at the new commands that we can use. To follow along on the commands that I'll be showing below, you need to install Github CLI, which you can find on my previous post linked above. Alternatively, you can also find out more information on how to get started by checking out the Github CLI official manual page. Authenticating with Github CLITo authenticate with your Github account, just run the following command: gh auth login This will[…]

  • Dead-Simple API Tests With SuperTest, Mocha, and Chai

Dead-Simple API Tests With SuperTest, Mocha, and Chai If you have to create automated tests for an API, you will most likely use or explore using Postman. Postman is possibly the most well-known API development and testing tool out there and with good reason. It's an excellent tool for both developers and testers to create documentation and demonstrate how your application APIs should work.Using Postman gives you an excellent starting point for building a test suite to check your API works as expected. However, depending on your test cases and API endpoints, you'll likely run into limitations with Postman:Because Postman does so much, its interface can feel confusing and somewhat bloated if all you want to do is API testing.Once you start testing more than a handful of API endpoints, it can feel a bit messy to organize your different scenarios for each one.If you want to use Postman on a continuous integration environment, you'll have to use Newman, the command-line companion to Postman. While both tools should technically work the same, they're still separate tools, and you might stumble with issues where your test results differ. If you have multiple team members collaborating on API testing and documentation, Postman's pricing can get a bit steep for small organizations, since it's a monthly fee per user.I recently worked on a project that's using Postman for API documentation and testing. The team began experiencing most of these pain points directly, so we set out to look for a better solution to get the team building automated tests as they continued[…]
